In today's world, it's absolutely imperative to have your own domain name.

What is a domain, you ask?  It's your website address, like "mysite.com".

It's not difficult to get your own and it costs as little as $1.99 a year.  Enter something into the "Start a Domain Name Search" field above.  If the name of your company is Jill's Pawn Shop, then try entering jillspawnshop into the field.  If that name has already been taken, try something else, like "jillspawn" or look at some of the suggestions they give you.  If you haven't decided on a company name yet, try entering your name.  The next time someone asks you what your email address is, you can say something like "It's john@johnsmith.com"!  It will make you stand out, not to mention making it easy for everyone to remember your email address.

If you have a "collector" mentaility, for the small investment needed to obtain a domain name, you might want to start building a domain name collection.  For instance, when the public caught wind of hydrogen powered cars, people were grabbing all the domain names they could that were related to hydrogen cars, knowing someone was going to want them one day and the collector will be able to sell it for a profit.

Having said that, take caution when you start the search for your domain name.  Suggestion:  Don't get caught up in the name.  If what you want is already taken, get creative.  Keep searching for different names until you find one you like.  Unless you have disposable income, don't get fixated on a name and end up buying a premium domain name.  A premium domain name generally starts out on the low end of $1,998.  That's too much money to pay for a domain name when you're starting a business.  Find a name, buy it and OWN IT!  Develop your website and live and breathe that domain name.  Build it and they will come.  You just have to tell them about it.
